Photo of the Day - September 5, 2007 - September Along the Chattooga

This picture was taken from the South Carolina side looking across to the Georgia side of the Chattooga River. The tree is a Sourwood - almost always the first tree in the southern woods to turn color - or at least to turn red. We have a few nice sour woods around Greensboro. If you see a tree with reddish leaves in September, taller than a dogwood but still and under story tree, and generally with a sweeping/arcing shape, and a dark alligator-skin type bark, it's a Sourwood. There is one right at the end of Lake Brandt Road where it dead ends into Old Battleground. I will enjoy it until the Urban Loop takes it out.
